Lately, one of my personal favorite activities for self-care has been taking baths not only because I have more time on our hands, but because it’s a soothing experience for both the body and mind.
Self-care is essential to maintaining our physical, mental, and emotional health—and the way we choose to take good care of ourselves can be as basic as taking a shower in the morning or as elaborate as spending some serious money to go on a week-long yoga retreat!

The luxury of soaking in a hot bath is a great stress reducer for many women. By adding certain scents, bubble bath, and essential oils to the bath water, we can create a totally relaxing experience or energize ourselves once again, depending on the products we use.
Here are a few important tips to remember about essential oils:
- Avoid if you have scratches or broken skin. Do not use essential oils on broken, inflamed, or irritated skin.
- Be careful of sunlight when applying citrus oils on your skin. Sometimes citrus essential oils can cause photosensitivity. Avoid direct exposure to sunlight after using any citrus oil.
- Do a patch test before first use. Because they’re concentrated essential oils have the potential cause allergic reactions or skin irritation. If you’re using an essential oil for the first time, do a skin patch test before full use. Apply a small amount to the inside of your forearm and wait 24 hours to see if any reaction occurs.
- Always dilute essential oils. Essential oils are concentrated and need to be diluted in a carrier oil before using them.
One of the benefits of taking a bath at night is that it makes you fall asleep quickly. According to studies, warm baths help us to relax and drop our body temperature. Furthermore, the resulting drop in temperature leads to better sleep. It’s recommended that you take a bath within 1 – 2 hours of your bedtime. Finally, your bath time does not need to exceed 10 minutes before you can experience better sleep.
Exposure to fluid through bathing and steaming is a great way to ensure hydration of the body in all aspects. The human body is made mostly of water and that is why we are encouraged to drink plenty of it. But soaking in it is also extremely beneficial. We can enhance this by adding certain oils or salts to a bath or bathing in a natural body of water or pool, rich in naturally occurring minerals.
